Strange glimpses of rich landscapes and enigmatic figures are the subjects of LiuJi’s paintings, works of saturated color and an emotional vibrancy that is at once intriguing and disturbing. Full of energy with violent undercurrents, LiuJi’s paintings evince visions of death and dreams, twilight and the transitory. The figures in these paintings—whether human or animal or truly fantastical—seem to be caught in moments of revelation, a narrative about fate. Both expressionistic and figurative, LiuJi uses an uninhibited brushstroke and an imaginative, nostalgic sensibility reminiscent of Marc Chagall or Edvard Munch. Waning evening light and rainstorms, streetlamps and winding paths lend an eerie and poetic tone to LiuJi’s works, as the subjects within the images find themselves in a mysterious place of beauty and struggle. LiuJi studied at LuXun Academy of Fine Arts and the LiaoNing Educational College. Since 1979 he has devoted himself to teaching art in several universities and in cultural center classes. His work has been selected for the Eighth Art Exhibition of the People’s Republic of China.
